From a tiny family car to a full-on sports car, the Honda Civic has come a long way since its 1973 arrival in the United States. The 1973 Civic shares little resemblance to its 2021 counterpart, but from the beginning the Civic remains a true industry gamechanger.
1st Generation 1973-79
The one that started it all, the diminutive, first-generation Honda Civic made a big splash in the years following the 1970s energy crisis due to its high gas mileage and overall quality.
2nd Generation 1980-83
Why mess with perfection? The second-generation Civic shared many similarities with its predecessor, although featured a slightly smaller body and under-the-hood mechanical changes, including a third valve per cylinder that boosted engine efficiency and power output.
3rd Generation 1984-87
Available in hatch, sedan, and wagon body styles, the biggest change to the third-generation Civic saw the introduction of a 1.6-liter engine producing 128hp and badged "si".
4th Generation 1988-91
The fourth-generation Civic saw perhaps the greatest visual change, moving away from the previous trend of sharp straight line styling and instead toward a softer, more polished shape. Under the hood, important mechanical changes included a new fuel-injected engine.
5th Generation 1992-95
The fifth-generation Civic brought about more rounded styling, a physical increase in size, and the continued adoption of the VTEC system.
6th Generation 1996-2000
1997 marked the first time the high-performance Type R arrived on the scene, featuring an impressive 182bhp from the 1.6-liter engine, Type R badges, front and rear lip, wing, and fitted Recaro bucket seats and matching Momo steering wheel.
7th Generation 2001-05
The seventh-generation marked Civic’s move from a subcompact to a compact model, along with the addition of a hybrid model.
8th Generation 2006-11
The eight-generation Civic brought about the most dramatic exterior changes to date by showing off a futuristic and funky styling, including a short hood, expansive windshield, and more traditional profile.
9th Generation 2012-15

The 2020 CR-V Hybrid will be first electrified SUV from Honda in the U.S, joining the Accord Hybrid and Insight as other electrified Hondas built in the U.S. America’s best-selling crossover for the past 22 years benefits not only from the new hybrid-electric model, but also sees major upgrades such as a bolder front and rear styling, redesigned wheels, and standard Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technology. All models (non-hybrid) are now powered by a standard 1.5 liter turbo engine, formerly available only in EX and above trims.
"The Honda CR-V is the best-selling CUV over the past two decades and the updates we've made to the 2020 model, including a new hybrid-electric variant, solidify its position as a leader in the compact SUV market," said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior V.P. of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co. "The CR-V Hybrid also signifies our direction to bring Honda hybrid-electric technology to all core models and to invest in the production of electrified vehicles in America."
Powered by an advanced two-motor hybrid powertrain, the 2020 CR-V Hybrid combines two electric motors and operates without needing a typical automatic transmission for smooth and seamless power delivery similar to a pure electric vehicle, and also enjoys a wide range of electric-only operation.
Because the hybrid battery pack and its control systems are housed under the cargo floor, the CR-V Hybrid maintains stellar cargo utility, including a 60/40 split rear seatback with a flat load floor. All-wheel drive is available for the CR-V Hybrid, a first for Honda's two-motor hybrid system in the U.S, which activates an electronic clutch when available traction is low and transmits the appropriate level of power from the electric motor to the rear wheels. Total system horsepower reaches a peak of 212 (up from 190 HP on the non-Hybrid CR-V), along with an expected 50% increase in the EPA city fuel economy rating compared to the CR-V.
For non-hybrid CR-V models, all trims are powered by the efficient 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine, rated at 190 horsepower, and include available front- or all-wheel drive configurations.
Sophisticated Interior and Exterior Styling
The 2020 CR-V continues Honda’s legacy of first-class interior space and exterior styling. A more upscale and rigorous exterior features a more aggressive look in front with a more pronounced chrome grill, including round LED fog lights, with the Hybrid model getting hybrid badging, a distinctive blue Honda logo in the center of the grille, and distinctive bar-type fog lights with five LEDs.
In the rear, new features include dark-tinted taillights, dark chrome treatment for the garnish below the rear glass, and 18-inch wheels with a dark gray and machined finish. The CR-V Hybrid Touring trims receive hybrid badges on the hatch, a unique rear bumper, and a hidden tailpipe. Three new exterior colors are available for the 2020 model: Sonic Gray Pearl and Radiant Red Metallic and new Aegean Blue Metallic.
On the inside, the CR-V Hybrid stands out from non-hybrid models with its unique interior trim, featuring the new push-button gear selector flanked by three switches for Econ, Sport, or EV mode, which allows CR-V Hybrid to operate under electric-only power. Also unique to the Hybrid model is the instrument panel, featuring a display for power/charge status, as well as a driver-selectable display for power distribution and regeneration.

It is inspiring that we get to see in others what drives so many of us to serve, the belief in that promise. All of America is decked out in red, white and blue, and we are reminded that there is more that unites us than divides us. With every salute, parade, and patriotic song, we are reminded that this gift of freedom, this experiment of democracy, is so dear to us that even to this day, young men and women dedicate their lives to protect it.
Even though it seems this time of year brings a new round of potential threats and calls to be aware of the dangers in the world, we pause to think about what would have happened had 56 men let their fear override their belief in the future of a free and independent state. We have been through worse as a nation, and have endured. We will continue to do so. Are we perfect? No. But the promise and the unity give us the hope. Hope will defeat fear every time.
As the day ends, darkness falls and the first starburst explodes in the sky, we can reflect on the time together, away from work and troubles, and remember that America is still a strong nation. And, thanks to the legacy of those who declared our independence, those who died for it, and those who continue to protect it today…we are free.
